As Lead Digital Designer in the Toronto Star newsroom my time is often spent discussing upcoming projects and delegating work to the rest of the team based on priority. That doesn’t mean I don’t get to have a little fun.
These animations for Kerry Gillespie’s Pan Am project, The Science of Sport, were an exercise in patience and repetition, as I rotoscoped practice footage of 5 athletes.
There was a lot of trial and error, not only surrounding which elements to animate and the careful colour decisions, but in keeping the final GIFs down to a reasonable file size without losing quality.
In the end the overall project, with amazing photos by Steve Russell, Chris So and Randy Risling, and great design by Jessie Willms, was nominated for several awards and took home silver at the Digital Publishing Awards.
